George Crosby Manitou State Park is a rugged, off-the-beaten-path destination on Minnesota's North Shore, offering breathtaking waterfalls, challenging hikes, and unparalleled solitude.
Nestled in the rugged wilderness of the North Shore, George Crosby Manitou State Park offers an escape for those seeking solitude, challenging hikes, and breathtaking natural beauty. Unlike other North Shore parks, this hidden treasure features no visitor center, minimal signage, and a back-to-nature ethos that makes it a true adventurer's paradise.
The park’s highlight is the Cascades Waterfall, a multi-tiered cascade on the Manitou River that many consider one of the most stunning falls in Minnesota. The secluded location ensures you’ll likely have the trails and scenic views all to yourself. The park’s history as a family-donated conservation effort means it remains largely undeveloped, offering a tranquil experience amidst pristine wilderness.
Located about 90 minutes north of Duluth, the park is accessed by a network of back roads. From MN-61, take State Highway 1, then follow signs to Cramer Road (Hwy 7), where a kiosk marks the entrance. During winter, the road is closed at the kiosk, adding an extra half mile to your hike.
Backpackers can enjoy rustic campsites along the Manitou River, with no drive-in options available. Nearby state parks like Gooseberry and Tettegouche provide traditional campgrounds for those seeking convenience.
Winter transforms the park into a frozen paradise. Cascades Waterfall, with its icy formations, becomes a surreal sight, and snowshoeing along the trails adds a fresh layer of adventure.
